I remember when I first started out as a social media manager and all I did was undercharge. I struggled so badly with imposter syndrome because I didn’t have a marketing degree, that I felt lucky that anyone would want to hire me at all.
So I charged them $500 a month. Eventually I was working *constantly* and felt like my clients overstepped boundaries, didn’t trust my work, and asked for more than the scope of work on a weekly basis (“can you update the home page of our website real quick?”) But I didn’t have a marketing degree (or the confidence and know-how to be a kick-ass social media manager). So I became burnt out, discouraged, and one by one my clients dropped off.
I clearly remember sitting on my bed after a client had called me letting me know they “didn’t need my services anymore” and the tears started welling up. How the heck was I supposed to find clients that actually valued social media management?
